Dhurga
Classes across the school are very fortunate to have Trish Ellis teach a 30 minute Aboriginal culture and language lesson each week. Many classes use Yarning Circles to discuss ideas and important learning in their class. The students of Kindergarten regularly use their yarning stick to take turns as they share ideas and listen to one another.
Mrs Brady and her class offered an Acknowledgement of Country at the official opening of our refurbished facilities recently, speaking in Dhurga and using actions. The words to the Acknowledgement Song have been learnt by many of our classes and are included here:
bagan njiinj mirriwarr njiinj
(Here is the earth and here is the sky.)
mudjingaal njiinj ngayaga njiinj
(Here are my friends and here am I.)
mana up man down
(We come together hand in hand.)
We are on walbunja yuin ground.
(We are on walbanja yuin land.)
Over the past term students in Year 5 and 6 have been preparing a retelling of stories of creation from the Bible and Dreaming stories of creation. Trish has been working on translating the stories in Dhurga. These performances will be very special for our school and an excellent way for the students to use their learning of language in a meaningful way. We will be sharing these video recordings of the retellings with you in the coming weeks.
The students of Year 5 are pictured below rehearsing for their retelling of In the Garden, the story of Adam and Eve.
